When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God....
Deuteronomy 17:18-19 (NIV)
Knowing that the Israelites would one day want a king to rule over them, God commanded Moses to write down certain guidelines for that future king and for all the monarchs who might follow him. God wanted the king of Israel to be a man who trusted in the Lord, a man who was not unduly influenced by others, and a man who was not occupied with the pursuit of his own personal wealth.
But God also wanted the future kings of Israel to be men who would base their rule on the Word of God. So he commanded these future kings to write their own copies of the Law and to keep those copies of the Law close to them, reading the Scriptures daily so they would not wander from the ways of God or allow pride to consume their hearts.
Leaders need a "compass." They need a "North Star" to guide them in their decisions and their policies. So pray for those who lead you in your church, your community, and your country. Ask God to guide them and to place a foundation beneath their feet that can direct their choices.
